This Week's 1L Life Hack!

Finish Strong

Well, they are finally here - Spring semester finals.  In the next few weeks, make sure that you do your best to leave everything you have left in the law school.  Study hard for each exam to make sure that you have no regrets when grades come out in late May or early June.

Make the most of your time between exams by jumping into the next subject.  Don’t spend too much time relaxing or drinking after each exam, collect your thoughts about the exam you just finished and continue to prepare for the next exam.  The less you rethink the questions from the exam you just took, the better your focus will be for the next exam.

If your professors are offering extra office time, take advantage of it and ask the questions that you have.  Professors usually enjoy the end of the semester the most because they get to see the overall development of each student come to fruition through the questions that are asked right before the exam.

Again, make sure that you give the next two to three weeks everything you have so that you can enjoy the summer knowing that your grades reflect your effort.  Good luck on your exams!

Always masked, they usually perform and appear wearing tuxedos with top hats and large eyeballs for heads. By keeping their identities obscure, they’ve been able to focus on their music, create an air of mystery, and follow their unpredictable and delightfully bizarre muses. This absorbing documentary doesn’t lift the veil on the masked members’ identities, but it does provide the most comprehensive look at the band yet, including interviews with some of its ardent fans: The Simpsons creator Matt Groening, magician Penn Jillette, artist Gary Panter, MoMA curator Barbara London, and such musicians as Jerry Harrison (the Talking Heads) and Les Claypool (Primus). This Week's 1L Life Hack!

Quick, Study! Exams Are Fast Approaching

In the last weeks before exams begin you should really be buckling down and studying for the exams.  Having a plan for the review sessions offered by professors will help you guide your own study periods and let you know where the holes in your semesters are.  Additionally, now that the legal research a writing classes are over, you have extra time during the week to dedicate to reviewing for the final.

One way to think about exams is to strategize which exams are worth more in the scheme of GPA than others.  If you have a 4 credit hour class, that should be your top priority because it weighs heavier in your GPA.  Vice versa, if you have a 2 credit hour class, it should be your lowest priority because it is weighted less in your GPA.  At the end of law school, your GPA one of the biggest factors that employers are looking to in the hiring process.

If all of your classes are 3 credit hours, start reviewing with the class that you are finding easiest or the most enjoyable.  That will help to get you “in the mood” to review for the other classes.  If all of your classes are equally difficult, start with the first exam or scheduled review session and work in chronological order.  In any event, make sure that you are prepared to go to the review sessions with at least a few questions.  Your questions will help you and get the conversation started so that other people ask their questions.  Also, if you have a question there are probably several other people who are confused about the same topic or issue.

If you haven’t started your outlines, or if you are falling behind on them, now is a great time to get started.  As my mom always says, “There’s no time like the present.”  Get started so that you have time to practice writing exams style answers and reviewing multiple choice style hypotheticals during the time between exams.  Don’t leave everything until the reading week, get started now and finish strong!

This Week's 1L Life Hack!

Test Day Rituals

Do you have any test day rituals?  Is there something specific that you like to do the morning of a test?  Here are some examples of things that my classmates do before every law school exam: listen to the same few songs on repeat right before the test to get mentally prepared; eat the same thing on the day of each exam to prevent queasiness and nervousness; sit in the same place as they did during the semester; dress up for the test, “dress well, test well”; wear the same t-shirt or outfit “for luck.”

There are lots of things that you can establish as a routine to get yourself mentally ready for taking a law school exam.  I recommend several things to do as a routine or ritual during the exam period; get plenty of rest; eat balanced meals; don’t overdose on caffeine; and make sure to be on time for the exams.

Sleep is very important, studies have shown that a lack of sleep (especially a cumulative one) is equivalent to operating while intoxicated.  Make sure that you set yourself up for a good night’s rest the night before an exam.

Balanced nutrition will help you to be able to concentrate for the exam.  Eating a balanced meal with protein and vegetables will help you to stay alert and attentive during the exam period.  Loading up on sugar the morning of the exam will get you a quick blood sugar crash, likely half way through the exam.

Caffeine in moderation will be very helpful to you during the exam.  Depending on your regular intake of caffeine, one cup of coffee, tea, or a soda will keep you more than awake during the exam.  Don’t overload on energy drinks, they are likely to make you more jittery and nervous than you already might be.

Make sure that you set more than one alarm for the day of the test.  Being late for an exam will create unnecessary stress on you and may be extremely detrimental to your grade.  I doubt professors are sympathetic to excuses for being late to an exam, especially if the excuse is not a catastrophic event.

At the end of the day, do what you think will be most helpful to prepare yourself for the exam.  If that includes wearing a suit and tie or a tuxedo t-shirt, do it!
