THIS WEEK let's talk Networking...through your STUDENT BODY!
I know you all may be thinking it's too early to start networking, however, it's NEVER too early. This week is one of the most important starting points for networking. The Student Org Fair is more than just free barbecue at lunch time, although that barbecue did make me want to go back for seconds..and thirds. This is the time get to know your student org reps and get involved with what you would love, or think you would love, to do after law school.
As a 1L, I would highly suggest becoming a 1L representative for your favorite org. It helps you better understand the org and their goals. You become a liaison for your org and your fellow 1Ls; you'll be able to share exactly what it is the 1L class would like to see in the coming months with the org and knowing that you're apart of something made so beneficial to your classmates, is rewarding on its own.
Also, becoming a part of an org could give you life long mentorship! For instance, in the orgs I participate in, we have guest speakers come to almost every meeting. These speakers sometimes give day to day explanations about what they do in that particular field and what it's REALLY like after law school. During General Body meetings, these professionals hand out their business cards, email addresses, and sometimes their phone numbers because most really want YOU to succeed in law school.
Mentorship also happens within your org with the student body. These orgs are FILLED with law students who have been in the same seats as you right now and have probably ACED those quizzes and exams you're thinking about. You never know who can hook you up with a legacy outline, sell you a cheaper book, or simply offer some friendly advice and tips about your current 1L professors!
For more information about the organization that Capital University Law School offers, please see the link below and feel free to email any org with your questions! I'm sure they'd love to help!
