Spotlight on Intern and Externships

It's never too late, but the earlier the better, to be thinking about what you'll be doing this summer. Whether it is a paid internship or a externship for credit, Capital can help you find what may fit you.
Here are a few resources that I use when searching for intern and externships:
  • Symplicity. I love this website because not only are their internships within Columbus for students in all levels of law school but there are also internships in other cities and states that are posted here. There are after-graduation job prospects and even some scholarship offers that are attached to summer and fall clerk position. There is also an app for symplicity available in the Apple and Android App Store. Go and check it out, you're a resume upload away from your summer legal position. https://law-capital-csm.symplicity.com/students/index.php?s=home
Also, coming up this week, is an opportunity to circulate and meet representatives from various organization that hire our Capital Law students and even host some student externs. On February 7, 2019 from 4pm to 6pm, the Employer and Externship Expo will be happening at Capital Law School! For more information, visit the Events tab on the Symplicity website to RSVP. Your future awaits!

Spotlight on: Columbus Young Professionals Club

With all the insanity of Law School, the late-night study sessions, camping out in the building during finals week, and a dedication to learning, you probably forgot that in a short time, you will be back out in the professional world, joining a diverse and vast community of professionals.

With this community of professionals comes the opportunity to learn and meet new people.  If you’ve already joined a committee at the Columbus Bar Association, or one of the niche legal organizations the city boasts, then you may be interested in the Columbus Young Professionals Club!

With over 20,000 registered members ranging in age from 21-45, the group, founded in 2005, hosts networking events across the city, sports leagues, and community service events.

“Our mission is to offer connections, access, and value for our members through professional and fun events, quality athletics, and community impact.”
Said mission is accomplished through seven employees and over 50 volunteers working to connect Columbus, all while further building the City, and connecting young professionals together!
Has your interest been piqued?  Head on over to https://www.cypclub.com/ for more information, including how to become a member yourself!

LawSchool Life Hack: Maintaining your best YOU!

Law School is a different creature, I get it, believe me! But, that does not mean that you need to lose your best self in attempts of being the best law student. Here are some ways that you can maintain the best you WHILE in law school:

  • Create a schedule and STICK TO IT! By this I mean a schedule that goes BEYOND studying. Create a schedule that includes sleeping, exercise, and even snacking if you like to take time out of your day to do so (I know that I do🙂). A schedule can help you find some balance in between law school, studying, internship interviews, etc. It is also important to schedule some ME TIME for things that you do enjoy, even if it's one time a week.

  • Pick a daily cut-off time for studying and homework. You may have been able to pull an all-nighter in undergraduate but in Law School, there’s NOTHING worse than being exhausted from studying, then getting cold-called on by a professor. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. So, set a daily cut-off time for studying. For example, if your studying cut-off is 7:00 PM, stick to it. After 7, you stop all studying, law-school related stuff, and take some time for you to rest, go to the gym, etc. You’ll thank yourself ultimately for taking this time and giving yourself the ability to relax…if only just slightly.

  • And FINALLY, RELAX, it's just law school. I know, I know, it's easier said than done BUT freaking out about it will do more harm than good. Mastering law school TAKES. TIME. It's all about learning your method and lots of trial and error to get to earning your JD and passing the bar exam. Keep pushing, asking questions, and when in doubt, remember, "It's just law school!"

Is this you?
Well, say no more! The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Clinic needs your help! All law students (YES EVEN YOU 1LS), paralegal students, and administration are welcome to be a volunteer. There is NO prior tax training required to become a volunteer.

YES IT CAN! FREE VITA training materials are available for you to pick up outside of Professor Wood's office on the 6th floor, room 610.

1L Life Hack

First Set of Law School Grades

You all are probably listening to your friends discuss how great (or terrible) first semester grades were. You all probably are noticing that your class sizes have certain people missing.Your fall semester grades may have made you feel far from the superior student that you are, here are some tips and words of encouragement for the rest of the semester!

  • You are the same student that you were before grades were posted! Your grades haven’t changed how intelligent or how capable you are; don’t let them change how you see yourself.

  • The important thing is not what your grades WERE but how you respond! Whether your grades were what you had hoped them to be or not, go and talk to your first semester professors and figure out what it is you did well, where you can improve, and what this whole grading game is about.

Every lawyer will struggle with an assignment, not understand what is needed, and even experience failure. That’s part of the job, but it can also become the secret to your success.
