This Week: What's Happening at Capital University Law School?

Hello Everyone!

To our current students, I wanted to start off by saying good luck on your upcoming finals!

The weeks leading up to and the two weeks of finals is one of the most stressful times in a law student’s career. The key to being successful on your exams is making a study plan and sticking to that plan. If you follow your plan and follow any directions your professors give you, your exams will be a piece of cake. Remember to get plenty of rest, even though that is easier said then done, and stop by your professors’ office hours with any questions you might have.

The idea of exams sound fun? The law school will hosting an Info Session for Future Students on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 from 6:00pm -7:30 pm. This is an opportunity for students considering attending Capital University Law School to visit the law school, find out information on financial aid and scholarships, tour the building, and ask any questions about the law school admission process.

This Week's 1L Life Hack!

Continuous Lack of Sleep is Equated to Operating While Drunk

It may seem like a great idea to pull all nighters in the last few weeks before exams, but there are studies that have shown that continuous lack of sleep is the same as being drunk. As you continue to prepare for finals, ensure that you are getting enough sleep. By making a study plan and sticking to it, you can build in time for sleep. Don’t underestimate the power of sleep.
It is inevitable to think that you will be awake the night before an exam because you are nervous and feel unprepared. Make that the only sleepless night that you have during finals week(s). Get to bed on a regular schedule in between exams, that way your lack of sleep is not a pattern.
As a general rule, people cannot “bank” sleep, i.e. you cannot sleep the weekend before exams in preparation for a week of sleepless nights. But, you can catch up on sleep afterwards. So, if you spend the night or nights before your final LRW memo awake writing, you can use Thanksgiving weekend to catch up on the sleep that you missed for those nights. Don’t sleep the whole weekend away though, because you can’t bank those hours for the weeks that are coming.
People that are chronically sleep deprived function less cognitively and more methodically. Therefore, unless you have studied for finals thoroughly ahead of time and can do legal analysis with your eyes closed, depriving yourself of sleep because you are cramming for an exam is not going to be a benefit. If you have pulled multiple all-nighters during exams, you are probably chronically sleep deprived and are not going to be able to logically formulate your answers for essay exams.
More fundamentally, cramming all night is just a bad idea. Take time ahead of reading week to make sure that you are well-prepared for finals. Make sure that you are getting a good amount of sleep, at least one full REM cycle, before each exam. Good Luck!

This Week's 1L Life Hack!

Exam Strategy: Make a Plan for Exam Week

Don’t get caught without a plan when reading week starts. Make a plan to study so that you are able to study effectively and get rest in between finals. That way you will have less stress (if that is possible) and you will be able to power through to the end of finals.

The school normally gives approximately 48 hours between finals during your first year. The rule is that you must have 24 hours between exams, this means 24 hours from start time to start time. During those last hours before the exam, you will naturally be studying only for the next exam.  Make a plan to fit in studying for the other exams during reading week and over Thanksgiving break.

My strategy was to work on my last exam first during reading week.  I finished my outline for each class in the reverse order of exams.  For example, my exam schedule was Contracts, Torts, Property, and Criminal Law, so I finished outlines in the reverse order Criminal, Property, Torts, and Contracts. This way when my Contracts exam was over I could just pick up my study materials for Torts and not have to worry about finishing other outlines during those two days between exams.

The reading week for fall exams is really only two days, Thursday 12/3 and Friday 12/4, so make sure you get ahead of the game by studying and finishing outlines over the Thanksgiving break. Two days is not enough time (for most people) to write an outline and get ready for an exam!

Don’t forget to think about little things like where you are going to sit during the exam beforehand (Do you need to be facing the clock? Is the exam in a different room than your normal classroom? Are you going to type or write the exam?). Make sure you get to the exam room early so that you can set up in the seat that you want and get comfortable before the exam starts.  The last thing that anyone needs is to be late to an exam!

This Week: What's Happening at Capital University Law School?

Hello Everyone!

I hope everyone had a chance to attend the Sullivan Lecture on Thursday, November 12. It was an incredible lecture by Professor Roberts, and the Capital University Law School community thanks Professor Roberts for making the trip! Thank you also to Professor Salem of the University of Toledo and Professor Weinstein of Cleveland-Marshall. They each provided excellent remarks after the lecture.

Make sure you know when your course registration window! Each student should have received an email saying when their register period opened and received directions on how to register. Also, make sure you have a plan for what courses you plan on taking and a back-up plan in case one of those courses is filled.

Finally, with finals rapidly approaching, I encourage students to stop by their Professors’ office hours to ask any question relating to finals. Every professor at the law school is willing to help students prepare for their exams in any way that they can. Whether it is clearing up the rule from a case, going over a practice exam, or anything else that would help a student excel on an exam, each professor is here to help you succeed. Don’t be afraid to stop by and ask your questions!
