This week's 1L Life Hack

Professors Are People Too

During your study time you have probably come up with questions that are very frustrating. Looking in the casebook, course materials, and hornbook are not always helpful. Don’t worry, there are more options.

Most of your professors offer weekly office hours to answer those types of questions. Office hours are a great opportunity to speak to the professor one on one about questions that you may have over the course material, study material, or even law school or the legal profession in general. Professors love teaching and seeing the lightbulbs illuminate when concepts are finally understood. In most cases, that is the main reason that the professor became a teacher. Give them the opportunity to help you personally by visiting them during office hours.

During the majority of the semester, the professors are usually not busy during office hours because most students do not take advantage of them. Office hours will probably get a bit busier as finals approach. Most professors will offer extra time during this period to be available for your questions.  If your question is beyond his or her scope or expertise, the professor will let you know.

If your professor does not offer office hours (the majority of CULS professors offer office hours), he or she will likely be available for questions after class or via email. Email is a great way to ask specific and detailed questions about the material that you are having difficulty understanding. If you have a question about a hypothetical, make sure that you include all of the facts so that the professor can help you to fully understand the issue presented. It may be helpful to tell the professor what you do understand, so that he or she doesn’t think you are asking for the easy answer.

It is highly unlikely that a professor will be unavailable for your questions. This is one of the great aspects of Capital University Law School, the accessibility of professors and the personal attention that each student gets from every professor. Don’t let yourself be intimidated, professors are real people too.
