1L Study Hacks

Studying can seem like blatant staring at a notebook for hours without retaining any valuable information. Here are some study hacks to help improve your memory:

  • Use scents or gum to jog your memory. Spraying an unfamiliar scent while you're studying is one the methods that can help job your memory when you spray it again before an exam. Also, chewing a strange kind of gum will work the same way; chew the gum while studying and then break out a piece of that same gum during an exam!
  • Listen to the correct type of music. The correct types of music can lead to more productive studying by elevating your mood. Classical music is peaceful and harmonious, making it one of the best options to listen to when studying. Ever heard of the Mozart effect? His music improves mental performance, try it!
  • Take regular study breaks. When your brain is working, you need to take regular study breaks to help your brain absorb more information. Taking a short break after about 45-50 minutes of study is ideal. Your focus and concentration usually become impaired after this
time, so anything after 1 hour and 30 minutes gets absorbed.
  • Times New Roman is KING. There is a reason why Times New Roman is the default font on most application. It is the fastest font to read!
  • Teach what you've learned. One of the best ways to test if you really understand a topic is to try to teach it to someone else. Try to go into explanation in lay terms for people not in law school who may not understand legalese. If you can't get anyone to listen, teach it to a class of stuffed animals!
